Building Resilient Offline-First Mobile Synchronization Engines
Engineering mobile applications that work with zero latency in subways, airplanes, and rural areas, synchronizing automatically without race conditions or data loss.
A mobile workforce field app was constantly losing technician job reports whenever users entered basements or remote areas, causing lost billable hours and duplicate work orders.
Guaranteeing that field operations (inspections, photo uploads, sign-offs) can be completed 100% offline, stored locally in SQLite, and reconciled gracefully when back online.

Architectural Rationale & Trade-Offs
Evaluating failure modes, scaling bottlenecks, and defensive engineering decisions.
Why WatermelonDB / SQLite over AsyncStorage or Redux-Persist?
AsyncStorage is a crude key-value string store that forces the entire database into JSON memory on boot. If your user has 10,000 records, the app takes 8 seconds to launch and crashes on low-end devices. WatermelonDB operates on a native SQLite thread with lazy loading: records are queried in milliseconds as the user scrolls, maintaining instant 60 FPS launches.
How do you handle conflict resolution between offline edits?
Field-level Last-Write-Wins (LWW) with server-assigned monotonic sequence clocks. If User A updates the customer phone number offline at 10:00, and User B updates the customer address offline at 10:05, the server merges both updates cleanly because the mutations target different fields.
Where does caching live?
The local SQLite database IS the single source of truth. The UI NEVER reads from the network directly; the UI observes local database queries. The network layer merely pushes deltas into the database in the background, making the UI feel instantaneous.
What happens at 10x traffic during sync surges?
Sync pushes are structured as batch transactions. Instead of 50 individual HTTP calls for 50 offline actions, the client packs all 50 mutations into a single payload, cutting HTTP handshake overhead by 98%.
What happens if a mutation payload fails validation on the server?
Invalid mutations are quarantined into an in-app error registry with the user's local state preserved, rather than being discarded or indefinitely blocking subsequent valid mutations in the queue.
What would I deliberately NOT build?
1) Complex peer-to-peer CRDT libraries (like Yjs or Automerge) unless true Google Docs-style character-by-character collaborative text editing is an explicit business requirement. For 99% of business apps, field-level deterministic merges are 100x simpler, more performant, and easier to audit.
You own the system.
The code. The infra. The data.
Software should not become valuable enough to matter and then be impossible for the client to own or operate.
Everything I build is 100% client-owned intellectual property from day one. You own the code, the accounts, the infrastructure, and the data. No vendor lock-in.
What belongs to you in full:
