Architecture Blueprint // System #03

Designing an Industrial Inspection & Corrosion Mapping Data Engine

Architecting browser-based CAD and inspection mapping for non-destructive testing (NDT), processing 100,000+ ultrasonic wall-thickness data points without UI freezing in zero-connectivity environments.

The Real-World Context

Inspectors on offshore oil rigs and chemical pipelines must map ultrasonic thickness measurements across miles of metal pipework where internet connectivity is completely non-existent.

The Core Engineering Challenge

Rendering dense 2D/3D heatmaps in the browser, storing gigabytes of sensor readings locally on ruggedized tablets, and synchronizing conflict-free deltas once an inspector reconnects to the network.

Architectural Rationale & Trade-Offs

Evaluating failure modes, scaling bottlenecks, and defensive engineering decisions.

Decision 01 // Tech Stack

Why WebGL Canvas over standard SVG or DOM elements?

Rendering 50,000 inspection points with SVG causes catastrophic DOM bloat, spiking browser memory to 2GB and dropping frame rates to 3 FPS. By writing a custom 2D WebGL fragment shader, all 50,000 points are rendered on the GPU in a single draw call at 60 FPS, enabling instantaneous zooming, panning, and color-coded corrosion threshold alerts.

Decision 02 // Tenancy & State Model

How is data stored offline on the device?

IndexedDB partitioned into spatial grid tiles. When an inspector opens a 500-meter pipeline blueprint, only the visible spatial tiles are loaded into memory from IndexedDB via a background Web Worker, ensuring mobile memory remains below 150MB.

Decision 03 // Caching Layer

Where does caching live?

Asset caching is governed by Service Workers using Cache-First strategy for application code and inspection models. Local telemetry is written directly to IndexedDB before any network transmission is even attempted.

Decision 04 // 10x Scale Behavior

What happens at 10x traffic / sensor data throughput?

Ultrasonic gauges output hundreds of readings per second. Rather than updating the database or UI on every reading, readings are buffered in a typed `Float32Array` within a Web Worker and flushed in 100ms micro-batches.

Decision 05 // Third-Party Failure Modes

What happens when satellite uplink drops mid-synchronization?

Synchronization packets use chunked Protobuf streams with resumable upload offsets. If connection drops at 84%, the next sync attempt queries the server for the latest recorded chunk hash and resumes strictly from byte 85 without re-uploading the entire dataset.

The Most Critical Question // Architectural Restraint

What would I deliberately NOT build?

1) No heavy desktop-native wrapper like Electron when a Progressive Web App (PWA) with WebGL and IndexedDB runs faster and updates instantaneously without IT deployment headaches. 2) No continuous real-time WebSocket syncing for field devices where cellular signal is erratic and battery preservation is critical.

Absolute IP Ownership

You own the system.
The code. The infra. The data.

Software should not become valuable enough to matter and then be impossible for the client to own or operate.

Everything I build is 100% client-owned intellectual property from day one. You own the code, the accounts, the infrastructure, and the data. No vendor lock-in.

What belongs to you in full:

  • 01Source code & Complete Git Repositories
  • 02Apple, Google & Enterprise Developer Accounts
  • 03Cloud Infrastructure, VPCs & Production Databases
  • 04Figma Design Files, Assets & Documentation
  • 05CI/CD Deployment Pipelines & Signing Keys

Have a system that needs this level of architectural rigor?

Whether you are building from zero or rescuing a fragile prototype, I provide decisive architectural leadership.
